Transitioning from Contracted Freelance Work to a Full-Time Employee Transitioning from Contracted Freelance Work to a Full-Time Employee Additionally, some companies have a hard time interpreting the resumes of longtime independent contractors, since freelance work often does not fit into the traditional resume style of company, title, years worked, and responsibilities. To overcome this stigma, job seekers should first tap into their network of employers. How to Avoid Being a Pushover at Work

How to Avoid Being a Pushover at WorkHow to Avoid Being a Pushover at Work Some workers are naturally mora assertive than others. But theres a pretty wide gap between being assertive and being a total pushover, and if you land on the wrong end of that spectrum, you might end up not only setting back your career, but making yourself unhappy on the job .Of course, its easy to see how someone whos naturally timid might quickly reach pushover status. Maybe you have a demanding, aggressive boss youre eager to please. Or maybe you simply find it easier to agree to things than to argue against them. The problem, of course, is that if you dont change your ways, youll not only risk getting completely taken advantage of, but quite possibly burn out when others realize they can unload on you regularly. To avoid that fate, here are a few important steps to take.At the core of not being a pushover is mastering the art of respectfully but firmly saying no. Now one misconception is t hat you need to qualify each no you utter with a drawn-out, elaborate excuse. You dont. Rather, you just need to be matter-of-fact and secure in your responses .Heres an example. Imagine your manager asks you to work on a Saturday to help your team meet a deadline. Your first inclination might be to either say yes, or attempt to get out of that request by saying no but offering an intricate story to go along with it. But rather than start telling some tale of your long-lost cousin coming to town while your cat simultaneously needs his claws professionally filed down by the one groomer in town authorized to deal with that breed, save yourself the trouble and just say something like, No, coming in this Saturday wont work for me since I have previous obligations that day.Keeping your answers short and sweet often sends a louder message than feeling the need to justify them. And chances are, once your boss is caught off-guard by a no or two, he or she will get the point and stop attemp ting to take advantage. If you have pushover tendencies, the words no and Im sorry tend to go hand in hand. So eliminate the latter from your on-the-job vocabulary. The next time someone asks for something unreasonable, dont apologize for not being able to accommodate. Rather, couple your no with a short but effective explanation, and leave it at that. For example, if a colleague asks you to jump in on a project during a week when youre utterly swamped, you may be inclined to say, Im sorry, but Im really busy this week and dont think I have the time. But when you say it that way, the person asking might continue to push. On the other hand, if you eliminate the apology and firmly say, Im too busy this week and dont have the time, he or she is more likely to back off.The problem with saying no at work too often is that you could come off as uncooperative or inflexible, neither of which will work wonders for your career. Therefore, while you dont want to be a pushover, you also dont wa nt to inadvertently go to the opposite extreme, either. A good compromise? Get creative and aim to come up with solutions that help solve company problems without you having to suffer. For instance, say your boss asks you to work late one night on a last-minute presentation , and its not something you want to do (nor is it really your responsibility per se). Rather than say yes or no, try saying, Id like to help but cant stay past 600. Ill drop what Im doing now to compile some slides and will pick back up first thing in the morning. This way, rather than saying yes and ruining your night, or saying no and angering your boss, youre offering up an alternate solution that just might work. Even if it doesnt, youre still being respectful and helpful enough that your boss may not hold it against you.Being known as a pushover at work could hurt your career in more ways than one, whether its getting deckenfries with the lousiest projects or losing out on a chance to get promoted. Therefore, if youre starting to be known as the resident pushover, nip that sentiment in the bud before it really sets you back. Its a far better bet than letting others walk all over you and making yourself miserable in the process.

7 wellness reads that will help you live your best life

7 wellness reads that will help you live your best life 7 wellness reads that will help you live your best life When we think about what it means to live a healthy, balanced life, we like to look at the 360-degree picture. It’s not about following the perfect nutrition plan, sweating through the most efficient workouts or drinking the exact amount of wine that will keep us young rather than kill us faster. Instead, it’s about all of the spaces in between - from how we care for ourselves internally to how we choose to treat and value others around us. So if you’re looking for ways to make changes that provide a lasting and meaningful impact in your life, check out the seven books below.1. “The Gifts Of Imperfection” -  by Brené BrownThis guidebook from research professor and thought leader Brené Brown will help you first approach the world of wellness from the inside, understanding the concept of worthiness as it relates to how you treat yourself and how you engage with the world surrounding you. In the preface of the book, Brown writes, “Knowledge is important, but only if we†™re being kind and gentle with ourselves as we work to discover who we are. Wholeheartedness is as much about embracing our tenderness and vulnerability as it is about developing knowledge and claiming power.” Consider this read your jumping-off point.2. “How Not to Die” -  by Michael Greger, M.D. and Gene StoneIf you’ve ever considered adopting a plant-based diet - or simply being better about prioritizing produce in your meals - then this book is about to convince you that the lifestyle adjustment is entirely worth it.  Dr. Michael Greger, the brain behind  NutritionFacts.org, compiles dates from thousands of scientific studies to explore the top 15 causes of premature death in the United States and how following a predominantly plant-based lifestyle can serve as some of the best preventative medicine for virtually all of these ailments. It’s a harsh reality check for some, sure, but it has also inspired tons of people to live longer and healthier lives.3. “When Thi ngs Fall Apart” -  by Pema ChödrönIf you’re currently experiencing a significant hardship (and let’s face it - many of us are), ditch that cheesy self-help book that leaves you rolling your eyes more than feeling inspired and follow along with American Tibetan Buddhist Pema Chödrön instead. This beloved book from her collection of work teaches you that, when facing life’s difficulties, moving toward the pain you’re experiencing and becoming intimate with it will bring you into the space of healing and joy that you’re ultimately seeking. Many of the tools she offers stem from her Buddhist roots, helping those new to meditation approach the practice in a more cerebral way.4. “Eating Animals” -  by Jonathan Safran FoerAmerican novelist Jonathan Safran Foer veered from his traditional path with his third work, a memoir-investigative research hybrid about his experience of raising his first child in our current food climate. As a person who previously dabbled with vegetarianism, he delved into the moral questions that come along with our current farming practices, the foods we choose to eat every day and explaining to a child why we do the things we do. His reporting inspires readers to ask themselves what it really means to live humanely and how important it is to them. He’s also pleasantly witty despite the severity of the topic at times.5. “Everything That Remains: A Memoir” -  by Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan NicodemusIf you ever look around at your life and ask questions like, “How the hell did I get here?” and, “How could I have accumulated all of this stuff that doesn’t make me feel happy at all?” then this powerful work from The Minimalists will jive with your soul immediately. It might even inspire you to make some changes, both big and small. The often heart-wrenching storytelling encourages readers to consider how they prioritize time each day, how they feed into our rampant consumer culture (even if it happens s ubconsciously), and what life satisfaction and contentment really look like when they push all distractions and societal constructs aside.6. “The Wellness Project“  -  by Phoebe LapineThis pick from the voice behind the beloved blog  Feed Me Phoebe  will connect with anyone who has ever struggled to understand why their body does what it does. Faced with an autoimmune disease diagnosis in her early 20s, Lapine spent years navigating restrictive protocols set by her doctors that felt too depriving to be truly sustainable. So she began her journey of curating and adopting 12 wellness practices, ultimately discovering what did impact her health for the better. From cutting crappy sugar to swapping her beauty products out for 100-percent natural options, she shares her funny and all-too-real journey of what it’s like to overhaul your health on your terms.7. “The Weekend Effect” -  by Katrina OnstadLast but not least, consider how you spend your coveted free time with this bo ok from award-winning journalist Katrina Onstad. You don’t need us to tell you that this narrow window of downtime only seems to shrink with each passing week. But by telling stories of people, companies and countries who are working to protect this vital component of life, Onstad inspires her readers to reclaim the idea of working less, living more and what that can look like, focusing on the weekend specifically. This article was originally published on Swirled.

US Military Enlistment Standards and Dependents

US Military Enlistment Standards and Dependents US Military Enlistment Standards and Dependents Enlisting in the military for many people may seem like a way to make a fresh start. Unfortunately, when it comes to debt and other financial responsibilities, enlistment may not be an option for you depending on your credit history, financial responsibilities and your responsibilities to your dependents.   Military Regulations and Dependents The military has regulations that actually require you to provide adequate financial support for your dependents. Because of this, the military limits the number of dependents an applicant can have. Those who exceed the stated number of dependents require a waiver to enlist. Before a dependency waiver is granted for any of the services, the recruiting service will conduct a financial eligibility determination (i.e., they will look closely at your household bills and the income of your spouse).? Navy: The Navy requires a waiver for any applicant with more than one dependent (including the spouse).Marine Corps: In the Marine Corps, a waiver is required if an applicant has any dependent under the age of 18.Air Force: The Air Force will do a financial eligibility determination if the member has any dependents.Army: The Army requires a waiver if the applicant has two or more dependents (in addition to the spouse).Coast Guard: The Coast Guard requires a waiver if there is more than one dependent (other than spouse) unless the applicant is enlisting in the grade of E-4 or above when the limit is two dependents (other than spouse). Who Does the Military Consider a Dependent? For enlistment purposes, a dependent is defined as: A spouse, to include a common law spouse if the state recognizes such; orAny natural child (legitimate or illegitimate) or child adopted by the applicant, if the child is under 18 years of age and unmarried, regardless of whether or not the applicant has custody of the child. The term natural child includes any illegitimate child when: the applicant claims the child as theirs, or the applicants name is listed on the birth certificate as the parent, or a court order establishes paternity, or if any person makes an allegation of paternity that has not been finally adjudicated by a court; or A stepchild of the applicant who resides with the applicant if the stepchild is under 18 years of age; orAny parent or other person(s) who is/are, in fact, dependent on the applicant for more than one-half of their support. When Does the Military Not Consider a Spouse as a Dependent? In general and for enlistment purposes, an applicant is considered to be without a spouse (i.e., unmarried), if: Common law marriage has not been recognized by a civil court or state law.The spouse is incarcerated. The spouse is deceased. The spouse has deserted the applicant. The spouse legally separated from the applicant (for the Army, separation by mutual consent is sufficient). The applicant or spouse has filed for divorce. (Note: If the divorce action is contested, the service may deny enlistment until after the dispute is resolved in family court).

Do Some Summer Reading Remember that book your boss put on your desk in February- that you just haven̢۪t gotten around to yet? Or the 10 pages about Designing Your Life you read before the new season of your favorite Netflix binge started? Yeah. But since you̢۪re lounging by the pool anyway, add a bit of productivity the mix by picking up (or picking back up) one or two career-related books you̢۪ve been meaning to check out. Need some inspiration? Check out this list of the 21 Books That̢۪ll Get You Ahead at Work. 2. Throw a Party OK, by party, I mean networking event- but hear me out: Everyone̢۪s in the mood for potlucks, BBQs, and happy hours all summer, so why not host one with a job-related focus? Have a few friends pick up the same book you̢۪re reading, then discuss over white wine on your patio. Or, grab three friends in your industry, ask them to each invite three others, and have a get-to-know-you happy hour after work. You̢۪ll make nine new connections with next to no effort! Alternatively, you could invite your department over to your place for an office BBQ- it̢۪s a fun, easy way to get to know your employees or team members better. 3. Take Long Lunch Meetings When summer hours or more relaxed workdays roll around, all you want to do is take long lunches on a patio, right? So, do it! But, take advantage of this time and challenge yourself to set up lunch dates with one to two professional contacts each month. If you̢۪re looking for a new gig, pick people who work for the companies you love. (This template is perfect if it̢۪s a cold ask to a stranger.) Want to score that promotion? Choose people you̢۪ve worked with before or who are higher up in your industry who can give you insight into what it takes to get to the next level. Or, take a co-worker you̢۪ve been wanting to get to know better or one of the interns who might benefit from your expertise (he or she will appreciate the out-of-office time, too). 4. Make a List of Your Dream Companies Unless you̢۪re planning to stay at your company until you retire, it̢۪s always a good idea to have a running list of organizations you̢۪d be thrilled to work for on hand. So, spend some time on a lazy afternoon (when you don̢۪t want to be doing anything else) browsing the web for workplaces in your area or field. What companies do the kind of work you̢۪d love to do? Which have awesome clients or fantastic perks? What places do you hear about over and over as being great places to work? You can follow your favorite companies on social media or LinkedIn, pin photos from their websites to Pinterest, or- of course- favorite them on The Muse. Then, next time you̢۪re job-hunting- whether it̢۪s in September or three years from now, you̢۪ll have a great starting place. 5. Daydream Here̢۪s the easiest, most fun one of all: Treat yourself to a couple hours on a beach, on your roof deck, or in a hammock. Get comfortable, relax, and then allow yourself to just daydream about where your career might take you- two, five, even 10 years from now. Don̢۪t focus on what̢۪s possible or what you might have to do to get there- just allow your mind to wander and dream about the stuff that you probably don̢۪t get to in your day-to-day life. Do you want to be in a more creative role? Head up a new product or your department? Have a job that lets you travel? Start your own business? If you̢۪d rather, you can jot down your thoughts in a notebook or share them with a friend. Have something awesome in mind? Great. Now, think of just one thing you can do that̢۪ll help you get there. But don̢۪t worry- you can save that task for the fall.

Perfect Career Networking Conversation Starters

Perfect Career Networking Conversation Starters Perfect Career Networking Conversation Starters For some people networking is easy. They love talking to anyoneâ€"and everyoneâ€"they meet. For others, it’s not so simple. Attending networking events can be a challenge if you’re not comfortable talking to strangers, but it’s always worth giving it a try. In-person networking remains  one of the best ways to keep your career moving forward  and to get hired. People are more likely to offer assistance to someone they know personally, and with a little preparation you can make and cement relationships with contacts who can help you out. There are many different  types of career networking programs, and it’s easy to  find networking events  that are worth attending. Even though it can be hard to start a conversation when you’re one of those not-so-extroverted people, there are strategies you can employ  to  engage the person you’re talking with and to keep the conversation moving forward. Get Ready for a Conversation (or Two) Take time to create a  brief elevator speech,  so you’re ready to describe the professional you and what you do. Review the attendee list if it’s available. If there’s anyone special you’d like to meet, review their LinkedIn profile and  learn about the company  they work for. Jot down a few notes so you remember who will be there, the company they work for, and their role at the company, when you’re at the program. When you’re at the event, remember to check name tags to see where the other participants work. The tag may also have their job title listed. Asking about someone’s job and employer are always good ways to get a conversation started. Also, be on the lookout for the people you flagged when you reviewed the attendee list. What can you say? What interesting similarities might you  explore? How can you turn a quick introduction into an engaging discussion? Once you’ve got over the hurdle of  making an introduction to start the conversation, one of the easiest ways to continue the conversation is to make it about the person you’re talking to, rather than about yourself. Asking questions saves you from thinking about what to say, and gives you an opportunity to ask follow-up questions that will keep the discussion going. It’s also fine to say that you’re new to this, you’re a bit nervous, and you’d be happy to have someone to talk to or to give you some advice. 16 Career Networking Conversation Starters Here are some one-liners and some more in-depth conversation starters that will help to  keep  you on track and get the most out of all the networking programs and events you go to: Questions About the Event What brings you to this program/event/meeting?What do you think about the events so far?Have you attended before? What was the best part of the program? What do think of this venue/location?Do you know any of the speakers? Which would you recommend? What are you looking to get from this event/conference/program? What do you think you’ll take away from it?This is my first time at this event. Is there a session I shouldn’t miss going to? Questions Asking for Advice or Information Mention that recommendation when you meet the next person: “Hi,  [first person you met]  suggested I talk with you.”I see that you work for ABC company;  what do you do? What does the company do? If you know someone else who is employed at the company, now is a good time to mention the person you have in common. How did you get started in your career/industry? What do you love about what you do? Is there anything you’re not a big fan of?When you’re familiar with the company or have  read about it when you were doing research for the program, ask about the news you’ve read, new products that have been released, or anything else that’s timely and relevant. You can always get a little personal and if the person is wearing an interesting piece of clothing or accessory, you can comment on it. For example, “I love your scarf, it’s a really nice color.” Or “That’s a terrific bag, where did you get it?” Do be careful though, and don’t overdo it or get so personal that it could be construed as offensive. Follow up your compliment by introducing yourself. For example: “I’m [your name] and I’m glad to meet you.If the program has food and drinks, asking whether the person you’re talking to would like to grab a coffee or water, or some food or a snack, is another way to keep the conversation moving. I’m here from out of town; do you have any recommendations for places to go or things to do while I’m at the conference? Questions for When You Need Help I’m [your name] and I don’t know anyone here. Could I chat with you? As a follow-up, you could ask if the person has any recommendations for other people you should talk to.I’m new at this and not very good at networking, but I’d love to talk to you if you have the time. Remember that you’re not the only one who doesn’t like networking, and even if the person is a pro at it, you’ve given them an opportunity to respond either way. What to Avoid Asking It’s always a good idea to avoid politics because you don’t know which side of the political spectrum the person you’re chatting with is on. The last thing you need to start is a negative conversation about the state of the union. The weather may seem like a neutral topic, but if someone had flight delays or cancellations on the way to the event, or a storm was coming up that would impede their travel home, it may not be a pleasant conversation. When Networking Feels Like It’s Really Hard When you feel like you’re fumbling for words, even “Hi, I’m [your name] and I’m pleased to meet you” works. Remember, the person you’re talking to may be feeling awkward as well, and you could be doing them a favor just by saying hello. Another strategy to tryâ€"â€"often recommended for public speaking, but which  works for networking tooâ€"â€"is to pretend you’re someone else: a master networker who likes doing these events. You’re like an actor performing in the role of someone who loves making conversation. If you’re really stressed about networking, there are ways you can  feel more comfortable working the room. You might not end up loving the experience, but you may actually like it a little and you’ll be better prepared for the next time around.

The Backwards Closing Technique

The Backwards Closing Technique The Backwards Closing Technique Imagine if you started a sales cycle in reverse order. Instead of prospecting and qualifying, you asked for referrals and discovered additional sales opportunities. While this may seem insane, the Backwards Closing technique, when performed correctly, is not only an effective sales tool but usually is one of the most stress-free closes you, and your customers, will ever experience. Where It All Begins To serve as a quick review, a typical sales cycle starts with prospecting and ends by asking for referrals. Most salespeople work very hard at moving from step one to the final step and often lose a sale because either they dont do a good enough job in one step or the customer loses interest during a step. While losing sales is part of sales, what if you employed a backward approach to your sales cycle? In other words, what if you began a sales cycle by asking for referrals? It may sound a bit insane to those who have been in sales for a long time, but there is a proven bit of psychology behind this approach. A basic human need is to be consistent with our self-image. In other words, if you say something to someone about yourself, then you will be driven to demonstrate proof that your statement is accurate and reflects who you are. Getting a prospect to give you a list of referrals of people that she knows who may benefit from your product or service, puts them in a position of having to support their recommendation by learning more, and eventually using your product. Getting the Referrals Walking into someones office and asking for referrals will probably get you kicked out of the office quickly. If you were to present yourself and your product or service professionally, gauge the level of interest of the person to whom you are presenting, then ask for a few other professionals who they think might be interested in what you are representing, your chances increase dramatically. What most backward closing technique users experience is that they feel that the customer is immediately put at ease when they realize that you are not trying to sell them something. This removal of tension causes the customer to relax a bit and to drop their guard. If you are going to get a referral, it will most likely come seconds after the customer drops their guard and before they have a chance to give deeper thought to your request. Ask a Closing Question If you are successful in getting a name or two, your follow-up must be to ask your customers permission to use their name when approaching the person they referred you to. In most cases, the customer will balk when asked this question and, hopefully, want to learn more about your product so that they can either be more comfortable about having given you a referral or to discover if your product will benefit them in some way. Either way, know that if you reach this point, you are in a strong position. Remembering that people want to live up to their self-image and to how they present themselves, many customers who give a referral end up buying the product. Theyve already given their friends or business associates a recommendation by giving their name(s) to you, and know are driven to remain consistent with their actions. An important part of this style of selling is to be keenly aware of buying signals. Questions that often come after your request for referrals must be seen as opportunities to demonstrate, or at least discuss the values of your product. Since most customers are quite adept at meeting with sales professionals, using the backward style will, in many cases, create some curiosity in your customers mind. With curiosity comes questions. Questions are buying signals in disguise. This Backwards Closing Technique is not for everyone and most likely will result in more denials than actual referrals. The opportunities that do close usually end up resulting in additional sales when you approach the referrals. The final benefit to this style of closing is that you always remember one of the Golden Rules of Sales: Ask for Referrals!!!

What happens when a big business tries to take over and rename a neighborhood

What happens when a big business tries to take over and rename a neighborhood What happens when a big business tries to take over and rename a neighborhood What if Google tried to rename your neighborhood? That happened to some Californians in 2017, when Google Maps changed the moniker of three San Francisco neighborhoods â€" Rincon Hill, Folsom, and Transbay â€" to “East Cut.”Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Given the extensive reach that Google has in the transmission of geographic data, through Google Maps and its geospatial analysis software Google Earth Engine, the name quickly spread and was adopted by other businesses, such as Uber. But residents decried the change. “It’s degrading to the reputation of our area,” one told The New York Times.Neighborhood renaming is nothing new. Name changes occur when historical names no longer fit, during rebranding campaigns and through gentrification â€" such as when Pigtown, Brooklyn was renamed Wingate. The name Pigtown originally referred to a number of pig farms located i n the area. In the 2000s, the area was renamed Wingate by developers to lure in new buyers. There are many reasons why someone might want to change their neighborhoods name, but what’s driving current name-changing initiatives carried out by big businesses with little or no personal connection to the places they rename? As a geographer, I see three main driving forces â€" all of which can leave longtime locals feeling upset and left out.Marketing rebrandTake National Landing, Amazon’s new name for Crystal City, Virginia. The name was decided upon by Amazon, local economics groups and JBG Smith, a real estate company based in Washington, D.C. The name change, revealed in Amazon’s November announcement on its new headquarters, was meant to unite the neighborhoods in Northern Virginia, Crystal City, Pentagon City, and Potomac Yard areas. However, in a Washington Post article, Arlington County Manager Mark Schwartz suggested that the name change would not be adopted by the local gove rnment. In most cases, it’s not individual companies making these changes. In the case of the East Cut label, it turns out that Community Benefit District Board â€" made up of residential, commercial and nonprofit representatives from the area â€" approved the change in 2017, working with Google to come up with the label.Gentrification divisionsGentrification of dilapidated urban neighborhoods is a common driver of renaming.Research in Philadelphia by sociologist Jackelyn Hwang shows that gentrification not only shifts the demographics of a given area, but leads to divergent definitions of neighborhoods.Minority residents were more likely to call a wide area one neighborhood, named “South Philly.” White residents, by contrast, divided the same area into multiple neighborhoods, such as “Graduate Hospital,” “G-Ho,” “So-So,” “South Rittenhouse,” “South Square” and “Southwest Center City,” splitting up areas by their socioeconomic characteristics and crime l evels. In such cases, the use of different neighborhood definitions served to legitimize one’s presence in a community. Neighborhoods do this by evoking a sense of place for residents, describing a relationship that the place has with someone’s biography, imagination and personal experiences. The names create boundaries between those who are perceived to belong to these communities â€" and those who do not.Real estate adsAnother driver of neighborhood label change is the real estate market. The use of catchy names, like SoHo in Manhattan, evokes images about the type of environment you might find there. Create the right vision for a buyer, and the area might seem more appealing to them.In Detroit, Google is also responsible for renaming neighborhoods and even inserting new names, like the Eye. The New York Times has speculated that the real estate market is a likely culprit.Real estate agents use neighborhood names in their marketing campaigns. These new labels can get picked up by companies like Google, legitimizing the changes through the company’s wide influences. In the Detroit case, officials created their own neighborhood map of Detroit, correcting errors in the Google Map.In some cases, these types of changes aren’t welcome by neighborhood residents. For example, in Harlem, the Keller Williams real estate company began marketing the southern region of Harlem as SoHa without the approval of local residents. This change spurred political action. State Senator Brian Benjamin introduced legislation in 2017 banning these types of unsolicited name changes. While these name changes might seem innocuous, official neighborhood names are recognized by the U.S. Geological Survey. Neighborhoods are one example of a type of populated place that does not have official federally recognized names. What happens when these official names do not correspond to the names on the map?Resisting changeNeighborhoods play a critical role in creating a sense of belonging and camaraderie among neighbors. They are known by their institutions, crime rates and appearance, as well as the characteristics of their population.Neighborhood names carry strong cultural and socioeconomic expectations. In a 2015 study, people in 12 major U.S. urban areas were shown online ads for used iPhones. They were less likely to respond if the ad mentioned that the seller was a resident of a disadvantaged neighborhood. That suggests that racial and socioeconomic stigmas related to a neighborhood were transferred to their residents.Whether name changes are driven internally by community members or from external pressures from big businesses like Amazon or Google, these changes have impacts on the social and spatial patterns of urban cities. For example, these types of changes can lead to increased property values, pushing out current residents. In Oakland, California, neighborhood name changes have led to soaring rental prices, as higher-income residents from San Fransisco infiltrate the market.I’ve seen a few successful cases of neighborhoods getting new names â€" usually when the renamers work together with the locals to include their opinions and celebrate their history. For example, Nap Lab, a design collective located in Indianapolis, took on the city’s lack of neighborhood names. New names like University Heights, West Indy and Poplar Grove came out of detailed analysis of city records and community documents, as well collaboration with local experts and the internet. Their map, first released in 2008, is still sold today. This article has been updated to clarify when Pigtown was renamed and which neighborhoods were renamed East Cut.Raechel A. 3 Steps to Leverage Your Past Successes in Your Current Job Search

3 Steps to Leverage Your Past Successes in Your Current Job Search 3 Steps to Leverage Your Past Successes in Your Current Job Search 3Job seekers who think in-depth about their past successes  set themselves up for further success. They gain confidence in their abilities, and this attitude shines through in their application material and interview responses. Prepare to make an outstanding impression by taking the steps below to leverage your past successes in your current job search. Leveraging your past successes in your current job search can help give you the confidence you need to succeed. Here are three steps to leverage your past successes: 1. Maintain an “accomplishments” binder. Designate a central place to store career-related material that validates your strengths. Items might include performance reviews, letters of appreciation from managers or customers, certifications, and awards. Likewise, include your own notes. There is only one sure-fire way to accurately recall past accomplishments- write them down! says Joel Garfinkle, author of Getting Ahead: Three Steps to Take Your Career to the Next Level. Everyone should keep a career journal where you can jot down even the smallest accomplishments. Were sales up this month? Write it down. Did you complete a project ahead of schedule and/or under budget? Write it down. Were you asked to present at an industry conference? Did you secure a new contract? This information isnt just valuable when youre looking for a new opportunity, but even at your current organization when it comes time for a review, a promotion, or if youre looking for a salary increase. 2. Construct an attention-grabbing cover letter and resume. Armed with information about your past success, show employers why you are the best person for the position. Get specific- concrete examples are more memorable than blanket statements- and choose achievements pertinent to the job at hand. Match your past accomplishments with the job duties and skill sets the potential employer is looking for, Garfinkle suggests. Is the new position one where youll be managing people? Talk about how you not only managed a team of 26 people, but how you decreased turnover in your department by 45 percent. 3. Dazzle in the interview. Finally, get ready to seal the deal by continuing to promote your successes in the interview. For maximum effectiveness, pay attention to your presentation. When people interview you, rattling off a list of your awards, certifications and past successes can feel like bragging. Its uncomfortable for you and the interviewer, says author and career counselor  Aricia E. Shaffer, MSE. She suggests framing achievements as engaging short stories of one to two minutes each. This method keeps the interviewer’s attention, lets your personality shine through, and highlights how your strengths fit with the company’s needs. And while combing your success binder for appropriate examples, take a moment to appreciate all that you’ve accomplished. You’ll get an energy boost that’s sure to carry over into the interview! While scientists and IT professionals have always experimented and conducted business dealing with large amounts of data, the term “big data” didn’t even hit mainstream until April 1998 when John R. Why No One Is Talking About Resume Languages and What You Need to be Doing Today

Why No One Is Talking About Resume Languages and What You Need to be Doing Today Resume Languages Secrets That No One Else Knows About This page will allow you to answer questions you might have about how to compose a resume for a job that you have your eye on. Resumes can oftentimes be vague that is a huge mistake. The 30-Second Trick for Resume Languages Resume language skills are the same. The only instance you wouldn't incorporate this info is should you don't have any such language proficiency. For a particular example of the best way to do so, see my post, the way to Include Spanish' on Your ResumesA Specific Example. Include your language skills within this section. The Argument About Resume Languages If you get a wide selection of technical abilities, however, your abilities may wind up being precisely what gets you hired. You might also have your communication and disciplinary abilities, along with highlight how patient you're with your students. It's so importa nt to be sure your soft skills are extremely clearly communicated in the body of the resume. There are a few important skills you ought to have on your resume. Employing action verbs in resume writing is as simple as any other kind of writing, so long as you know what things to include and what things to look for. Notice how the example resumes are extremely specific when it has to do with technical skills. If you decide to use a CV, follow the exact same guidelines to list your language skills on top of your CV. So in regards to your CV, there are things you want to explain. The Awful Side of Resume Languages If you're fighting to think of any, you can attempt utilizing the job descriptions of ads in your industry, and looking at LinkedIn profiles of individuals working in similar roles. A well-written resume should be customized for each work application. Specific programs and applications are frequently used as keywords in the event of a technical resume. Opportunely, e ngineering resumes have an extremely straightforward format. Keeping that in mind, where you choose to feature your language proficiency matters. The capability to speak different foreign languages will always be regarded as a strong point irrespective of the particular needs of the work position. When you've decided your proficiency merits mention, the next thing to think about is how you should define it. To provide the employer a better idea about your language knowledge, include what you've done utilizing the language in preceding jobs or associated experiences. The Downside Risk of Resume Languages Naturally, professionalism isn't defined by exactly what you have on. To get hired, you have to be oozing with professionalism at each turn. For this reason, you should relate it to actual experiences on the job. Volunteer experience is also a fine add-on to healthcare resumes as it shows the hiring manager which you have compassion off the work too. You may still claim s ome amount of proficiency, but might also need to remember you will want to refresh your familiarity with the language to make sure that you're up to speed. There are various levels of language proficiency. You should include it in your resume because it is going to propel you ahead of others who don't have language proficiency for a competence. In linguistic terms, proficiency doesn't translate to the very same meaning as fluent. Resume Languages - What Is It? The area of business is huge and there's a good selection of positions out there in it. What you do away from the workplace can have an effect in landing a huge job in these types of fields, therefore it's well worth noting any volunteer work that you do. For instance, if you are asking for work in the EU, utilize the CEFR levels. In an ever-expanding international market, knowledge of foreign languages is getting more important each day. In uncommon circumstances, if you've limited language capability generally, bu t language experience in a specialized sector (computer, for example).
